President-elect Joe Biden announced his intended nominees for several cabinet-level positions on Monday, including John Kerry as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, a new post. The position is on the National Security Council, underscoring Biden’s commitment to tackling climate change and his intention to treat it as a serious national security issue. “This appointment finally elevates climate change to the very center of U.S. national security policy where it belongs,” said Paul Bledsoe, a former climate adviser in the Clinton White House. As a new position, it is not entirely clear what Kerry’s role will look like, but it appears it will focus on international climate action.
