Swift action to build out renewable energy would reduce American energy costs, according to two new reports. American households could save thousands of dollars per year by completely electrifying — using electricity to power stoves, heating, and cars — if that electricity is sourced from clean sources like wind and solar, given the right regulatory conditions, according to a new analysis from Rewiring America. The electrification analysis comes on the heels of a report from the investment bank Lazard Ltd. showing the cost of solar energy per megawatt produced has dropped enormously over the last decade and is in some cases cheaper than continuing to run existing coal and gas plants.
