California Attorney General Rob Bonta has subpoenaed ExxonMobil, seeking information into the oil giant’s efforts to deceive the public into believing the “myth that recycling can solve the plastics crisis.” The investigation is probing whether and how fossil fuel companies purposefully lied to the public about the dangers of increased plastics production, triggering and deepening a crisis that threatens the health of current and future generations. Among the myriad threats posed by plastic production and pollution, new research also shows microplastics can give pathogens, including three common parasites, a means to concentrate in seafood and in the waters along coastlines.
