The Finnish town of Salla (Pop. 3,400) is bidding to host the 2032 Summer Olympics. “If we haven’t succeeded in halting climate change by then, it is too late. We want to keep Salla as it is, and our winters cold and full of snow,” Mayor Erkki Parkkinen said in a statement. In a promotional video, residents of the Arctic town, where temperatures can fall to -58°F, swim in frozen ponds and set up beach volleyball nets in fields of snow. “The heat is coming,” the tongue-in-cheek video declares. “Thanks to carbon dioxide, this snow will be sand. Winter will be a lot shorter.” (AP)
