The Biden administration and California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a plan on Tuesday to develop wind farms off the California coast. Long opposed by the Defense Department over navigation concerns and stymied by logistical barriers presented by the Pacific’s deep coastal waters, the two areas chosen for development would feature floating wind turbines. Combined, the two areas could support 4.6 gigawatts of electricity generation and power 1.6 million homes. The DOD supported the announcement because “the world faces a grave and growing climate crisis,” Colin Kahl, the undersecretary of defense for policy, said.
