Renewable energy industries have grown during the coronavirus pandemic, in sharp contrast to fossil fuels which have been brutally hit by falling demand, according to an International Energy Agency report released Tuesday. Renewables are also expected to overtake coal as the world’s biggest source of electricity by 2025. Renewable energy sources are “immune to Covid” IEA head Fatih Birol said at a news conference. Wind, solar, and hydro electricity consumption is expected to grow nearly 7% this year, according to the IEA report, while overall energy demand will fall 5% — the biggest drop since World War II — and renewables are expected to grow an additional 10% next year as projects delayed by the pandemic come online.
