Businesses cannot claim to achieve net-zero climate pollution if they are invested in new fossil fuel supplies, deforestation, or other environmentally damaging projects, according to guidelines set out in a new report from top environmental and finance experts at COP27 released on Tuesday. Few if any standards exist for how to measure or verify promises by nongovernmental and subnational actors to cut and offset climate pollution. The report, which included 10 specific recommendations, also criticized companies that buy cheap carbon offsets, “often lack[ing] integrity instead of immediately cutting their own emissions.” (AP, Axios, Reuters, Protocol, Reuters, The Guardian, Climate Home)
