The city of Arlington, Texas, denied approval for a fracking well after advocates connected the disproportionate harms oil and gas drilling operations have on communities of color. The move came just after the city council adopted a resolution acknowledging the “devastating impact” of COVID-19 on Black and Hispanic communities and committing to lifting up “the medical and social needs” of the marginalized. The well in question is located in a working-class neighborhood, next to a daycare center. “We could probably throw our balls out to the fence,” Wanda Vincent, owner of Mother’s Heart Christian Learning Center, told Bloomberg. “Some of our children do have asthma and sometimes we see respiratory issues even in our baby class. They are just babies and already have problems in that area.” (Bloomberg $)
