Half of the planet’s 2.2 billion children are already at “extremely high risk” of harm caused by climate change and pollution, a new report from UNICEF says. “Children are uniquely vulnerable to climate hazards,” UNICEF head Henrietta Fore said. While nearly every child worldwide faces danger from pollution or climate impacts — including heatwaves, floods, cyclones, disease, or drought — 1 billion children across 33 countries face three or four of those dangers simultaneously.
